Overview

Security is not a single feature, product, checklist, or technology.

It is a way of designing systems, so they are harder to compromise, easier to understand, and more resilient when something inevitably goes wrong.

This section has security concepts that apply across the entire SSE documentation project. These topics are not tied to one specific system, vendor, workload, or implementation pattern. They are reusable security ideas that should influence how systems are designed, built, reviewed, ran, and improved.

There are identities, devices, networks, applications, dependencies, vendors, pipelines, secrets, logs, backups, access paths, and operational processes all interacting at the same time.

The goal of this section is to make those moving parts easier to understand.

What Belongs in This Section?

This section is for security topics that apply broadly across systems.

If the guidance is reusable across applications, infrastructure, identity, automation, operations, or vendors, it probably belongs here.

Identity and access How users, services, administrators, and automation are granted access.
Privileged access How sensitive access is isolated, limited, checked, and removed when no longer needed.
Secure operations The practices that keep systems understandable, maintainable, observable, and recoverable.
Security reviews The questions, checklists, and review patterns used to find weak assumptions before attackers do.
Threat modeling The process of reasoning about how a system can fail, be abused, or be compromised.
Detection and response How suspicious activity becomes visible and how the organization responds when prevention fails.
Data protection How confidentiality, integrity, availability, classification, retention, and recovery are handled.

Use this section when you are:

  • Evaluating operational risk.
  • Documenting security expectations.
  • Preparing for incident response.
  • Looking for reusable security guidance across SSE.

These pages are not meant to replace system-specific documentation.

They are meant to shape it.

System-specific documentation should explain how a particular system works. This section explains the security concepts that should influence how those systems are designed and run.


The Big Idea

Security should not depend on everyone remembering every possible risk.

Good security documentation gives people reusable patterns.

It helps engineers, operators, reviewers, and decision-makers ask better questions:

What happens if this identity is compromised? It helps evaluate blast radius and access design.
What controls this system upstream? It helps show clean source and supply chain risk.
What depends on this system downstream? It helps understand impact if the system fails or is compromised.
What access exists all the time? It helps find standing privilege that could be reduced or moved to Just-in-Time access.
What must remain available during failure? It helps evaluate resilience, recovery, and operational continuity.
What assumptions are hidden? It helps reveal security-through-obscurity problems and undocumented risk.
What would an attacker do next? It helps shift design thinking from prevention-only to containment and recovery.

Security improves when these questions are asked early.

It improves even more when the answers are documented clearly enough that other people can challenge, improve, and use the design.

Security Is Shared Work

Security is not only the responsibility of a security team.
Security is influenced by everyone who designs, builds, approves, configures, operates, reviews, or depends on a system.
That includes engineers, administrators, developers, architects, help desk staff, managers, auditors, vendors, and business owners.

The more people who can understand the design, the more people can help find weak assumptions.
The goal is not to make every person a security expert. The goal is to make security understandable enough so that more people can take part in improving it.

Security Gets Stronger When More Defenders Can Reason About It

Hidden risk is still risk.

Clear documentation gives more people the chance to find it before an attacker does.
